In the IAFD Code of Practice there is a commitment to provide full training for staff with a view to improving the quality of service provided.
The Association took a decision in 2003 to develop a structured approach which would be externally accredited on an all island basis. Consultations were instigated with Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) which resulted in the modular programme described here. It is modelled on the concept of assessment of activity in the workplace but includes a limited number of written examinations.
The programme is designed to be undertaken by candidates of different ages and experience. The individual modules can be completed at the candidates own pace but it is expected that all modules will be assessed within two and a half years. It is based on a national award of eight modules at Level 5 in the National Framework of Qualifications.
The eight modules cover the following areas:
Funeral Administration
Arranging and Managing Funerals
Care and Presentation of Deceased
Grief Awareness
Safety and Health at Work
Communications
Information Technology
Work Experience
On completion of each individual module a Component Certificate will be awarded to the candidate by FETAC.
Candidates will be required to:
Attend an introductory workshop at which the aims of the programme will be outlined
Engage in distance learning which will include compiling a portfolio of work and/or assignments relevant to the modules
Attend workshops in respect of each module
The following techniques will be used to assess the knowledge and skills that candidates will have achieved on successful completion of modules:
Learner Record
Collection of Work
Skills Demonstration
Assignment
Examination (written)
On completion of all eight modules, the FETAC National Certificate in Funeral Practice will be awarded.
